PH women’s volleyball team falls short against Vietnam in five sets

The Philippine women’s volleyball team absorbed an opening game loss in the 30th Southeast Asian (SEA) Games.

Vietnam held off a comeback by the Philippines in five sets, 21-25, 25-23, 25-19, 20-25, 15-8, Tuesday at the PhilSports Arena in Pasig City.

Jovelyn Gonzaga’s late exploits in the opening set helped the Philippines take the 1-0 set advantage.

It was a different story in the next frame as Vietnam made some adjustments to score an equalizer.

Vietnam continued with its steady plays to keep the Philippines at bay in the third canto to take a 2-1 set edge.

Not to be outdone, the national team would fight back in front of their screaming hometown fans to force a deciding set.

Alyssa Valdez carried the scoring load for the Philippines in the fifth set, but Vietnam just came more prepared to snatch the win.

The national team will be tested again in their next assignment as they face the 12-peat seeking Thailand on December 5 at the same venue.
