SEA Games: Carlos Yulo bags a gold medal for gymnastics

World artistic gymnastics champion Carlos Edriel "Caloy" Yulo put on a show in front of his fellow Filipinos en route to a gold medal in the men's individual all-around event in the Southeast Asian Games at Rizal Memorial Coliseum on Sunday.

With a capacity crowd cheering on his every flip and tumble, Yulo garnered a total score of 84.900 to stamp his class on the field.

Vietnam's Dinh Phuong Thanh (82.350) and Le Thahn Tung (81.700) claimed silver and bronze, respectively.

"I just want to thank God and thank them," Yulo said after his victory, expressing his gratitude to the crowd that chanted for him after every completed rotation.

Yulo, who qualified to the 2020 Tokyo Olympics through the world championships in Stuttgart last October, was admittedly nervous to perform in front of the home crowd.

"Here, the crowd gives more attention to the Philippine team. In Germany, it's like nobody knows me, so I'm just doing my thing," he said.

The clear favorite from the get-go, Yulo served notice of his gold medal intentions with a superb showing in his pet event, the floor exercise. Delivering an impressive performance, he garnered a score of 14.650 from the judges.

In the pommel horse, his weakest event, Yulo put up a score of 13.600 to finish third behind Malaysian's Tan Fu Jie (14.600) and Loo Jeremiah Phay Xing (13.700). He tallied a 13.600 on the still rings, good for second behind Vietnam's Dang Nam.

Yulo scored 14.900 on the vault, behind Vietnam's Le (15.050). He then put up 14.400 on the pommel horse, also finishing second behind Vietnam's Dinh (15.000). He topped the horizontal bar with a score of 13.750.

Gymnastics president Cynthia Carrion was pleased, but not at all surprised, with Yulo's golden achievement.
